Early Dog Socialization for a Healthy, Well Behaved Pet – Dog Daycare Has It

March 7, 2017

Many parents who have to work feel guilty about sending their children to daycare.  But then they see what a great opportunity daycare provides their children for socialization, and the guilt gives way to gratitude.  It's the same with our pets, really, who are very much our children.  A quality dog daycare provides your pet a safe, healthy environment with opportunities for playing and dog socialization. It's a great opportunity for both you and your pet.

Improper Socialization is Dangerous

We all know that improper socialization, in both people and pets, very often leads to behavioral problems further down the road. You know, barking, aggressiveness, and the like, but there's even more to it than that. According to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, "Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age."

Suppose, for example, your dog gets lost. If through early socialization, she has developed the ability to accept new people and places, this will increase your pet's odds of being properly cared for until you locate her. And a safe, healthy dog daycare is great place for your pet to learn these crucial social skills.

The AKC on Dog Daycare

The experts at the American Kennel Club advocate the kind of playing and socialization for puppies that is especially characteristic of that to be found in a dog daycare. Here's what the AKC has to say (http://www.akc.org/content/dog-training/articles/puppy-socialization/):

●"Take it public: Once your puppy is used to small amounts of stimuli, move outside of his comfort zone to expand the amount of new experiences he'll have." The recommendation is to then take your puppy to a new street or a friend's house, but, obviously, a qulaifies dog daycare would be best.

● "Go to puppy classes: Once your puppy has started his vaccinations, he can also attend puppy classes. These classes not only help your puppy begin to understand basic commands, but also help expose him to other dogs and people. Skilled trainers will mediate the meetings so that all dogs and people are safe and happy during the process."

Daycare isn't just for human children anymore. It's for pets as well now and just as crucial for a well rounded behavioral education. Join us this week to give your pup the behavioral leg up you'll both appreciate.
